Fly Fishing the Upper Colorado River

Rating: 4/5

Current River Conditions

March 5, 2025

The Upper Colorado is mostly thawed right now and the fishing is beginning to pick up. Midges, midges, and midges are what's hatching right now. There will be BWO's in the coming weeks, but this high-elevation freestone is usually a little further behind than other waters. Nymphing will be best with midges lead by small stoneflies, eggs, or leeches, but keep an eye out for risers! Be aware of spawning rainbow trout and leave them alone!! Additionally, don't walk on or near redds to ensure their eggs do not suffocate.
