Your time spent on the Orinoco River will be for an adrenaline-pumping encounter with Payara at the Maipures rapids. Amidst imposing rocks and powerful rapids, our excursions start with an exhilarating speedboat ride, followed by intense fishing sessions targeting Vampire Fish, Sardinata, and Pacu from rocky outcrops. As night falls, unwind in comfortable tents beneath the jungle canopy, concluding your adventure with a full day of fishing before returning to the lodge.

Getting to Bogota - Puerto Inirida

Getting to Bogota - Puerto Inirida

International flights to Bogota are simpler than they might seem. There are numerous airlines that fly to Bogota from Denver daily without flying overnight. Once we land in Bogota, the Afloat team will transport us to our hotel, which is included in the cost of the trip. The next morning we'll be picked up by the team and transported to the regional airport, where we'll take our domestic flight to Puerto Inirida (also included in the cost). From Puerto Inirida, a few hour boat ride will be taken up to the lodge where we'll get ready for our next six days of fishing.

Fly Fishing in the Jungle!

Fly Fishing in the Jungle!

The Amazon Rainforest is a vast ecosystem larger than the continental United States. With such a large area, there's an endless number of fish species to target. Our trip with Akuani River Lodge will be focused on four peacock bass species (temensis, Orinoco, butterfly, and intermedia) and payara. In addition to these species, there's an endless number of other species that can be encountered during the trip. Most notably are sardinata, black pacu, arowana, and piranha. This trip is for the streamer junkie who loves big eats and even bigger fights! Peacock bass and payara are known as some of the hardest fighting fish in the world, even in comparison to saltwater species. These fish are a whole other caliber that bring great smiles and sore arms to those who are lucky enough to tangle with them.

Gear for Peacock Bass

Gear for Peacock Bass

8-10wt rod matched with an appropriate sized reel that has a powerful drag. Peacock bass are hard fighters and love diving into thick brush and wood, strip hard and don’t let go! Leaders are made of a straight section of 40-60lb fluorocarbon to keep them from going into the thick stuff. Specialty jungle fly lines will be a must, having a tropical rated fly line with an aggressive taper to turn over big streamers is a necessity. Floating, intermediate, and sinking lines are highly recommended; Rio Warmwater Predator series is our recommendation.

Gear for Payara

Gear for Payara

10-12wt rod paired with an appropriate sized reel that has a powerful drag. Payara, much like peacocks, are incredibly hard fighters. Unlike the peacocks, we’ll be fighting payara in fast moving water making them incredibly difficult to land. The heavy rod is necessary for not only the fight, but also to throw the heavy sinking lines and large flies required to catch these beasts. We’ll match your payara rod with a 400-500gr sinking line, The 10wt will pair with a 400gr, 11wt with 450-500gr, and 12wt with 500gr. The lines we recommend are the Rio Leviathan or Scientific Anglers Sonar Pelagic line. Wire leaders are the only way to go for these fish, 40lb wire with 40lb fluorocarbon should be sufficient.
