Not everyone knows what a day on the water with a fly-fishing guide actually looks like. In this video, we follow Golden Fly Shop’s Guide Manager, Tryston, and his client during a mid-November low-water session on the South Platte River near Deckers.

Tryston breaks down:

  • How to read seams, shelves, and drop-offs

  • Why fish hold in certain lanes during low flows

  • How to time the drift so flies sink into darker buckets

  • Proper rod angle, hookset timing, and fish handling

  • Realistic expectations for late-fall fishing on a pressured tailwater

Multiple fish come to hand—including browns and rainbows—on tiny midges and eggs, showing exactly how technical Deckers can be in November.

This behind-the-scenes look is the perfect intro for anglers curious about what it’s like to spend a guided day on Colorado’s most iconic tailwater.

“How I miss my best friend…
He really is the best man…
How I miss my best friend…”

“Let’s go get some fish.”

Morning on the Water

“Morning.”

Music continues as the crew gears up on a cold mid-November day.

Reading the Water

“Just hang off that edge. Basically, what this edge is doing—it’s like two confluences coming together. Once the current comes straight off the tip of this island, it bowls out and creates a deeper pool.”

“That’s why he was hanging down there. I guarantee you there’s another fish.”

First Hookup

“Bring it back over here to your side, and go a little bit to the right for me… There you go.”

“Keep that rod tip up a little higher—yep, right there. Perfect. Set! There you go, good job.”

“Rod tip to your right for me… good, good. Just let him fight… yep, keep him pinned like that.”

“Good job, Mike.”

“I like that one because you had time for the flies to sink and get over that black, darker spot down there.”

Exploring New Water

“Beautiful. Let’s get a little farther down, fish a different section we haven’t hit yet.”

“Good—set! Good.”

Another Run

“On the left… a little tight this side. Yeah, just a little tighter. Yeah.”

“Drop that rod tip… good.”

“Yeah, there you go. It’s shallow right there, but then it gets super deep right after, so the flies will have time to drop off that shallow edge. You know what I mean?”

“Yeah.”

“You see this little black spacing between the grass here? That’s where I’m thinking we’re going to pull a fish if there’s anything here.”

Fish On

“Nice. Just keep him right.”

“Beautiful.”

“Keep him pinned—you’re doing good.”

“Little baby brown.”

“Little more, little more—raise that rod tip up. Beautiful.”

“Good job, Mike.”

“Of course we’re counting.”
