Follow Xavier along as he takes one of his client's on a review trip with Set Fly Fishing. During the week he fished at their Jetu'u and Itati Lodges targeting golden dorado, pacu, and pira pita.
We will be hosting trips with SET this year! To see full details of that trip, click here: https://www.goldenflyshop.com/pages/golden-dorado-argentina-set-fly-fishing
If you’ve ever dreamed about chasing golden dorado in Argentina, this is the kind of trip that sticks with you long after you leave.
We just wrapped up a six-day adventure in Corrientes, fishing with Set Fly Fishing—and while the fishing had its highs and lows (as it always does), the overall experience was nothing short of incredible.
This wasn’t just another fishing trip. It was a full immersion into one of the most unique freshwater fisheries in the world.
We landed in Corrientes to a classic Argentina welcome— 100° heat and instant humidity. Right away, you know you’re not in Colorado anymore.
The plan:
We started in the Iberá wetlands region, then moved to the upper river systems near Itatí—big water, sandbars, and classic dorado structure.
This was a “review trip” for Golden Fly Shop, meaning we’re planning to host trips here in the future—but for now, it was about learning the fishery and enjoying the experience.
The Golden Dorado is one of the most fascinating fish you’ll ever chase.
They are:
Think:
“A mix between a musky, a trout, and a permit.”
They’ll absolutely smash a fly one moment—and refuse everything the next.
That contradiction is what makes them so addictive.
One of the coolest parts of this trip was participating in conservation work with the Golden Dorado Conservation Coalition.
We helped:
Why this matters:
There’s surprisingly little scientific data on dorado behavior. Researchers are still trying to understand:
There’s even a theory that certain areas act as nurseries, with fish migrating upriver as they mature—but it’s not fully proven yet.
So yeah… you’re not just fishing—you’re contributing to real science.
Classic setup:
The eats are violent. The hook-ups? Not always guaranteed.
You’ll miss fish. Everyone does.
This might surprise people—but pacu fishing was insanely fun.
Setup:
It felt like:
“Dry fly or nymph fishing… but for jungle fish with human-like teeth.”
They fight hard, eat berries, and behave nothing like you’d expect.
Yes—you’ll catch piranha too.
Not the target—but definitely adds to the experience.
Let’s be honest:
This is not a numbers game fishery.
We dealt with:
At one point, weather literally forced us off the water mid-session.
But that’s part of it.
This is hunting, not harvesting.
And when it all comes together… it’s worth it.
Quick reality check moment:
I snapped my 8-weight rod mid-trip.
Lazy cast → fly hits rod → game over.
Luckily:
Lesson:
Bring backup rods… or be ready to adapt.
Fishing trips are supposed to be about fish.
But honestly?
The biggest takeaway from this trip was the people at Set Fly Fishing.
You can’t fake this kind of hospitality:
It’s one of those rare places where you don’t feel like a client—you feel like you belong there.
And that matters more than any fish.
Short answer: Yes.
Long answer:
If you’re the kind of angler who:
Then golden dorado needs to be on your list.
They don’t give it to you easy—and that’s exactly why it’s worth it.
We’ll be organizing hosted trips through Golden Fly Shop, and I’m happy to help coordinate custom trips as well.
